virginiaThe UVA women’s golf program is represented by five current and former players at this week’s 116th U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship. The tournament runs Monday through Sunday at Rolling Green Golf Club in Springfield, Pa.

Four current Cavaliers join former UVA standout Lauren Greenlief in this year’s 156-player field. Rising sophomores Anna Redding (Concord, N.C.), Morgan Gonzales (Chandler, Ariz.), Lyndsey Hunnell (Troutville, Va.) and junior Maho Hayakawa (Lake Mary, Fla.) advanced to the tournament through sectional qualifying events.

Greenlief is one of 24 exempt players in the field. She gained her exemption to this year’s event and next year’s tournament by virtue of winning the 2015 U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship.

Following 18-hole rounds of stroke play on Aug. 1-2, the field will be cut to the 64 players for match play. Six 18-hole rounds of match play will determine the champion.

The USGA received a record 1,381 entries for the 2016 U.S. Women’s Amateur, breaking the previous mark of 1,303 that was set in 2015. The championship is open to female amateur golfers who have a Handicap Index® not exceeding 5.4. Entries closed on June 15, 2016.

Rolling Green Golf Club will be set up at 6,259 yards and will play to a par of 71 for the tournament.

Here are the first-round tee times for the UVA competitors:

  • Anna Redding – 7:15 a.m. (10th tee)
  • Lauren Greenlief – 7:59 a.m.  (1st tee)
  • Mayo Hayakawa – 8:10 a.m. (10th tee)
  • Morgan Gonzales – 12:30 p.m. (10th tee)
  • Lyndsey Hunnell – 1:36 p.m. (10th tee)

Altomare at British Open

Former UVA All-American Brittany Altomare finished 58th at the 2016 Women’s British Open. She is the first Cavalier to compete in the event. Altomare shot 3-over 291 during the 72-hole event. She had scores of 71, 73, 75 and 72 at Woburn Golf Club in England.
