Men’s soccer: VMI loses on road at Furman

AFP

vmi_logoPlaying in its second league contest on the road this season, the VMI men’s soccer team fell by a 3-1 score to Wofford Tuesday night at Snyder Field in Spartanburg, South Carolina.

Midway through the first half, Wofford’s Connor Donohue crossed the ball deep into Keydet territory, which deflected off the foot of a VMI defender and into the net for an own goal and 1-0 Terrier advantage. The misfortune for VMI (0-11-0, 0-3-0) was the only score of the opening half as Wofford (7-2-1, 2-1) entered the break with the lead.

Ten minutes into the second half, a VMI foul in its own box resulted in a penalty kick opportunity for Donohue, who converted the shot for a 2-0 Wofford advantage. Moments later in the 69th minute, another Keydet defensive miscue resulted in a second own goal to put the Terriers up 3-0 with only 20 minutes to go.

Refusing to give up, VMI fought back with a goal at the 73:09 mark when senior David Harpen launched a shot into the upper right corner to cut the deficit to 3-1.

Wofford earned a 20-8 shot advantage during the match, but only an 8-6 margin in the second half as VMI looked to even the score. Terrier goalie Garrett Closs achieved the win with three saves while VMI’s Alex Guerra picked up the loss on seven saves.

VMI returns to Southern Conference action Saturday with a home game versus UNC Greensboro at 2 p.m. at Patchin Field.
