Tom Perriello: Focus on small business

Contributors

Small businesses remain the backbone of our economy, and true economic recovery will come from rewarding the innovation and resilience of our local entrepreneurs.

I have been fighting to shift the focus from bailing out big companies to investing in small business, and the tide is starting to turn towards a strategy of making, building, and growing things in America again.

Small businesses are powerful job creators as well as incredible centers of innovation. Last week, I was thrilled to join constituents on the Edison2 team in Washington as they won $5 million as part of the X PRIZE competition for high-efficiency vehicles. Charlottesville’s Oliver Kuttner and his team created a vehicle in their Lynchburg shop that seats four and gets 102 mpg. It is inspiring to see a small business proving what I have been saying for two years: Southern and Central Virginia can be the capital of the new energy economy and the home of tomorrow’s jobs today. Our area has the entrepreneurs, the workforce, and the agricultural and manufacturing heritage to help America start building and making things again.
