Auburn smacks down UVa. in Chick-fil-A
Auburn rode a 21-point second quarter to a 28-17 halftime lead, and the Tigers dominated on special teams en route to a 43-24 win over Virginia in the Chick-fil-A Bowl.
Virginia (8-5) scored first on a 27-yard touchdown pass from Michael Rocco to Kris Burd at the 8:05 mark of the first quarter to give the Cavs a 7-0 lead. Auburn (8-5) tied the game at 7 on a three-yard run by Kiehl Frazier following the first of two blocked punts.
A second Rocco-to-Burd touchdown, this time from six yards out, made it 14-7 UVa. at the 12:59 mark in the second. Auburn answered quickly, marching 85 yards on six plays capped by a three-yard Onterio McCalebb touchdown run to tie the game at 14.
Auburn then executed a successful onside kick and got a one-yard TD run by Frazier five plays later to go up 21-14 with 10;33 to go before the half. Read more
VMI knocks off Presbyterian in OT
Stan Okoye had a season-high 27 points, Keith Gabriel tied the game in the final moments of regulation and D.J. Covington scored four crucial points in overtime, helping the VMI Keydets defeat the Presbyterian College Blue Hose, 78-70 in overtime, Saturday afternoon at Cameron Hall.
Trailing by nine with five minutes to go, PC (7-6, 1-2 Big South) went on a 13-2 run and held a two-point lead with 56 seconds remaining in regulation, 63-61. After VMI (6-7, 1-2) missed the front end of a one and one, just its third free throw miss of the game, Al’Lonzo Coleman missed two free throws for the visitors as well. Gabriel answered by scoring on a floater in the lane with 22 seconds to go, squaring the contest at 63, and the Blue Hose could not score on their final possession as the game went to overtime. Liberty women top Radford
Liberty started its New Year’s Eve celebration a few hours early by opening its Big South Conference schedule with a hard-fought 76-68 win at Radford Saturday afternoon. The Lady Flames used a 16-0 run early in the second half to break open a close game, and held off several rally attempts by the Highlanders down the stretch at the Dedmon Center.
The Lady Flames, who leveled their overall record at 6-6, start the Big South schedule at 1-0 for the 11th time in the last 12 years. Liberty, which put four players in double figures in the scoring column, shot a season-best 60.5 percent (26-of-43) from the field for the contest.
Radford drops to 6-6 overall and 0-1 in conference play, despite forcing 39 Liberty turnovers and turning the miscues into 42 points. It was the fifth straight season the Lady Flames have posted a win inside the Dedmon Center. Read more
JMU tops Stetson in OT
Senior guard Humpty Hitchens’ (Chillicothe, Ohio/Chillicothe) deep three sent the game to overtime and junior guard Devon Moore’s (Columbus, Ohio/Northland) runner with five seconds remaining lifted James Madison past Stetson 71-69 in the UCF Holiday Classic on Friday night at UCF Arena.
JMU improved to 7-4 with its third win in its last four games and sixth in the last eight while Stetson dropped to 4-8 with its fifth straight defeat.
Playing under the weather, Hitchens finished with 26 points, including a pair of threes in the final minute and a half of regulation and two more in overtime for 12 of JMU’s final 18 points.
JMU trailed by as much as 10 points at 52-42 with 8:46 remaining before fighting its way back into the game. Read more
#23 Cavs limp to win over winless Towson
Senior guard Sammy Zeglinski scored a season-high 20 points and sophomore guard Joe Harris scored 17 points and had a game-high seven rebounds to lead Virginia to a 57-50 victory over Towson Friday night (Dec. 30) at John Paul Jones Arena.
The victory was the 10th in a row for the Cavaliers and improved their record to 12-1. The 10-game winning streak is the longest for UVa since the 2000-01 season and Virginia is 12-1 for the first time since the 1982-83 season.
Virginia is ranked No. 23 in this week’s Associated Press poll and No. 24 in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches poll.
The loss dropped Towson’s record to 0-13. Freshman guard Kris Walden led the Tigers with 15 points and sophomore forward Marcus Damas scored 13 points and had six rebounds. Read more
JMU women pummel Rhode Island
Four Dukes scored in double figures as James Madison easily beat Rhode Island 77-42 in women’s basketball Friday night at Lehigh’s Stabler Arena.
The Dukes improved their record to 8-3, while Rhode Island dropped to 1-13 with its 11th straight defeat.
JMU redshirt junior guard Jasmine Gill (Greensboro, N.C./Page) led all players with 18 points, junior guard Tarik Hislop (Silver Spring, Md./Paint Branch) added 13, sophomore guard Kirby Burkholder (Bridgewater, Va./Turner Ashby) scored 12 and redshirt senior forward Lauren Whitehurst (Chesapeake, Va./Indian River) 10.
The game was part of the Lehigh Christmas City Classic.
The Rams’ top scorers were sophomore forward Emilie Cloutier with 15 and junior guard Ashley Rivera with 12.
Mason wins on the road at Charleston
Senior Ryan Pearson went off for a career-high 35 points and added a game-high 14 rebounds to power the George Mason men’s basketball team to an 84-76 victory at College of Charleston on Friday night at a sold-out TD Arena. The victory improved Mason’s record to 9-4 while the Cougars (10-3) saw their 15-game home win streak, tied for 11th longest in the nation, come to an end. The win was Mason’s first over the College of Charleston ever, snapping a three-game losing streak against the Southern Conference foe.
Pearson was one of three Patriots in double figure scoring, as sophomore Vertrail Vaughns contributed 12 while classmate Bryon Allen had 11 points. Five Cougars scored in double digits, led by 19 points from Antwaine Wiggins who also pulled down a team-high nine rebounds. Read more
Hampton nips Longwood
Longwood University dropped an 82-79 men’s basketball decision to Hampton University of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Friday evening during the consolation game of the Dr. Pepper Classic in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
The Lancers (4-10) missed a last-second three-point field goal attempt to tie, and were led by senior Antwan Carter|St. Petersburg, Fla. (St. Petersburg) with 23 points and classmate Jeremiah Bowman|Washington, D.C. (Harcum JC) with 19 points. The in-state Pirates (5-9) had led by 12 points with under five minutes remaining while led by Darrion Pellum with a game-high 33 points. Read more
London gets two-year contract extension
The University of Virginia announced a contract extension for second-year head football coach Mike London today. The two-year addition will extend London’s contract through 2016. London’s annual compensation increases to $2.1 million. The extension includes a longevity bonus that London can earn effective Jan. 15, 2015.
The extension also includes additional compensation for the assistant football coaches on the Cavalier staff.
“Mike London and his staff are a great fit for the University of Virginia,” said Virginia athletics director Craig Littlepage. “Commitment and continuity on the staff are major components of building a program. We want to keep the program’s momentum moving and this extension will help achieve that.” Read more
Staunton Senior Center to be site of filming in January
A video crew from the Internet program called Bus 52 will be filming Three Guys with Notes, a local band that will be playing at SSC on Friday, Jan. 13 at 10 a.m.
Bus 52 journeys around the U.S. interviewing people who do creative things to make a difference. Three Guys with Notes is a musical outreach program that conducts interactive performances with drums, rhythm instruments, and Native American flutes. The leader is the son-in-law of one of SSC’s former members.
The Waynesboro Senior Center is coming that day as well as second graders from Grace Christian School. So we will have a full house and much excitement as the film crew sets up and Three Guys with Notes performs and encourages interaction with the audience. It should be a fun day!
Recruitment under way for new CSC substitute director
For the past 15 years Ann Collins, a dedicated member of the Churchville Senior Center and community, has worked in different roles to support the efforts of the Center. She has worked many years as the substitute center director and has helped the transition of several CSC directors over this past decade.
Collins announced her resignation from this position earlier this week due to personal reasons. She has been a tremendous support to the Center and to Center Director Gail Ham. Thank you, Ann, for your dedication and hard work over these past 15 years!

A new way to learn languages
A new world language-learning resource, Powerspeak Languages, is now available at Waynesboro Public Library.
Powerspeak Languages is a new online language learning course that uses a variety of methods to engage learners. The core languages available are Spanish, French, German, Mandarin Chinese, and English for ESL learners.
Each course uses a variety of multi-sensory activities to take full advantage of the brain’s ability to acquire language. Designed specifically for use by the diverse audience of library users, the courses include a combination of scored online activities, exercises, lessons and games. Read more
