Reality check for UVa. baseball

Still-for-the-moment #1 Virginia is probably the most wounded 45-9 team in college-baseball history.

Consider:

  • Friday-night starter Danny Hultzen has lost three of his last four after starting the year 8-0 and starting his UVa. career 28-2.
  • Total run support for Hultzen in the three losses (to N.C. State, Miami and UNC): 5. Read more

#13 UNC clinches series with 2-1 win over #1 UVa., Hultzen

No. 13 North Carolina scratched across two runs in the eighth inning to rally and defeat the No. 1-ranked Virginia baseball team, 2-1, on Friday night at Boshamer Stadium. UNC (43-12, 19-10) clinched the series, marking the Cavaliers’ first series loss this season and breaking a streak of 15 straight ACC series wins, dating to 2010.

Despite the defeat Virginia (45-8, 22-7 ACC) clinched a share of its second-consecutive ACC Coastal Division championship as well as the No. 1 seed in the ACC Baseball Championship next week. Virginia Tech topped Georgia Tech, 7-5, Friday evening. If UVa and Georgia Tech finish tied in the standings, the Cavaliers hold the tiebreaker for the No. 1 seed based on their series win over the Yellow Jackets in April in Atlanta. Read more

Chris Graham: President Kucinich?

First thing about presidential-race polls more than a year out: They’re worthless, OK?

I say that, and there go the thousands of reads that we get on our poll stories, but oh, well. It’s the truth. Who’d have guessed at this time in the 2008 cycle that Barack Obama would have ended up getting the most votes by a Democratic presidential nominee since Lyndon Johnson? Come on. In May 2007? No way.

Ok, that said … polls, no matter how worthless at this time of year, are still loads of fun.

Case in point: Public Policy Polling and its let’s have some fun poll this week. PPP decided to test Donald Trump against a Democrat that you’d have to assume that even Trump could beat in a hypothetical head-to-head 2012 matchup. That’s right, perennial Democratic Party presidential-nomination early dropout Dennis Kucinich, he with such pull that he couldn’t even keep himself from being gerrymandered out of his congressional seat after the Census.

Apparently, though, Kucinich has more pull than The Donald, at least according to PPP, which this week would have Kucinich leading Trump in a 2012 matchup by a 40 percent-to-36 percent margin.

Any wonder why Trump dropped out of the GOP presidential race that he never really formally entered? Yeah. The Ron Paul of the Left cleans his clock.

Which leads us to some bad news for Sarah Palin. Yep, PPP tested her against Kucinich as well, and you’re not going to believe it, but she actually tested worse. Kucinich would lead Palin 43 percent to 36 percent in their 2012 matchup, taking independents by 10 percentage points.

(Repeat after me: Yikes!)

Seems that Mrs. Palin and Mr. Trump are right at home on reality TV. And that maybe Mr. Kucinich is a breakout reality star once his career in Congress comes to an end.

The 2011 Valley League season begins Thursday, June 2. The Generals open play on Friday, June 3, on the road at Rockbridge. Waynesboro’s home opener is Saturday, June 4, against Covington.

City police joining Click It or Ticket patrols

Waynesboro Police will join local and national law enforcement officers and highway safety advocates all across Virginia and the country for the 2011 national Click It or Ticket seat belt enforcement mobilization that begins Sunday, May 22.

During the mobilization, which runs through June 6, law enforcement throughout the Commonwealth will be cracking down on motorists who fail to obey all traffic laws – including seat belt and child safety seat use.

Virginia has seen a steady decline in traffic related fatalities in recent years, but even with the decline, preliminary data from 2010 indicates that there were a total of 740 fatalities, and of those, 314 were not restrained at the time of the crash. Two of the three fatalities occurring in the city of Waynesboro during 2010 were unrestrained and at least partially ejected during rollovers.

Pickup truck occupants have been proven to be less likely to buckle up than any other class of vehicle. In a 2010 Seat Belt Use Observational Survey conducted by Old Dominion University, the average seat belt use rate of pickup truck occupants was 71.4 percent as compared to the state use rate of 80.5 percent

“We need to continue to make the case that seat belts really do work,” said Waynesboro Police Sgt. Kelly Walker.”We will do that by hitting the roads and enforcing all traffic laws 24/7, no excuses, no warnings, and we will be paying particular attention to unrestrained drivers, passengers and children.
