#1 UVa. looking to ignite another long postseason run

Story by Chris Graham

#1 Virginia enters the 2010 postseason in a vastly different place than it entered the 2009 postseason.

The ’09 Cavs had apparently played their way out of the strong postseason run that had seemed to be in the cards with the hot start and a top-10 national ranking most of the season with struggles down the stretch in ACC play. Then came their magical run through the ACC Tournament in Greensboro toward the ACC title, the upset feelings over being shipped out west to play at #1 Cal-Irvine, the win out there, the thrilling comeback in the Super Regionals at Ole Miss, and the program’s first College World Series appearance. Tom Perriello: Government accountability

Column by Tom Perriello

When I came to Congress last year, I promised to fight for economic relief for my constituents, but also to change the way business is done in Washington. For far too long, both parties have answered to the special interests instead of to the people. Sometimes it can seem like Congress is not bound by the same rules as everyone else. It’s time to bring Main Street values of decency, openness, and accountability to the halls of Washington. Read more

Whew! That was close. It’s a good thing that the local budget season is over. One of these years a budget will cause real damage. Or do real good. But not this year.

However, you would never have known it according to the local press. Each week there were doomsday stories of our three governments about to grind to a halt. And that life here would never be the same. It would be paradise lost. Read more

Five years after leaving my hometown of Upper Marlboro, Md., I returned to my elementary school to speak about being an Olympian.

Everyone knew I’d helped the United States speed skating team win a bronze medal in the 5,000-meter relay. But there’s another important part of my story I don’t always talk about: I’m a Korean immigrant who grew up in the U.S. without immigration documents. Read more

There must be better places than a long slab of cement to celebrate one’s birthday.

But the more I reflect on it, this setting is probably fitting, given the countless hours of my lifetime spent traveling this long stretch of crumbling pavement, the Pennsylvania Turnpike. Read more

A Dad’s Point-of-View column by Bruce Sallan

My wife dragged me to her church for an all-day seminar called “Turbulence Ahead–Parenting Teens Through the Bumpy Years.”  I went along, in support of her and in support of her recent “turbulence” with our oldest son, who is 16½ and a handful.  But, my initial reaction was that this was a long time to spend on a subject that I know pretty well. Cuccinelli under fire – again

Story by Chris Graham
freepress2@ntelos.net

Are Democrats trying to create smoke around the latest controversy involving Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli to make people believe that there’s fire? Or is the issue with a sizable donation to the Cuccinelli campaign in 2009 from a veterans group that appears to be anything but the charity that it has claimed to be going to prove to be too hot for even the incendiary Cuccinelli to handle?
