Jim Bishop | Sparkling summer ignites love affair with autumn
A touch of melancholia came over me as I looked up and noted the tinge of color displayed among the top branches of the sugar maple tree in our front yard.
It seems a bit early for Mother Nature to be applying her multi-colored palette to the foliage, even though the first day of autumn was Sept. 22. I wonder whether this might serve as an early warning signal of some interesting weather shifts might be in store for Valley denizens. Read more

Henry Cejudo used to have to borrow his brother’s shoes. “He’d work out, and I’d work out after,” said Cejudo, who as a high-school senior won the U.S. Nationals in 2006, and then against all odds won the Olympic freestyle-wrestling gold medal in Beijing in 2008.
“Now I have my own shoe with adidas,” said Cejudo, who will be conducting a freestyle-wrestling clinic at Kate Collins Middle School in Waynesboro on Saturday. Read more

Is Landes feeling some heat from Marrow challenge?
Steve Landes is “starting to get a little PO’d” at what he thinks is Democratic Party opponent Greg Marrow’s effort to “distort” his legislative record. And the seven-term incumbent showed it Thursday night at the end of a heated debate between the 25th District candidates sponsored by the News Virginian and NBC29 at Kate Collins Middle School in Waynesboro.
“You’re distorting what I’ve done over the last 13 years. And I’ve worked hard. It takes time to do these things, but I’ve been in the trenches, and I’ve accomplished a lot, I think,” said Landes, who is facing a major-party challenge for the first time since his first run for the seat in the 25th, which represents Waynesboro, Crozet and portions of Augusta and Rockingham counties, in 1995. Ever since baseball went to an unbalanced schedule several years ago, it has meant six series between the Yankees and Red Sox. It just seems like more.

This weekend, you can watch them Friday night on TBS, Saturday afternoon on FOX and Sunday afternoon on ESPN. Unless you get the Cubs at Giants as the FOX alternate game. Read more
