As I continue visiting every county in the Fifth District throughout the August recess, I continue to get feedback and questions from constituents about health care reform. Specifically, our neighbors want to know how health insurance reform will help rural America. Our rural areas have almost five percent higher uninsured rate than urban areas, and the current recession means more people are losing access to their employer-based health coverage. Many of our rural hospitals are hemorrhaging money due to the rising pressure of uninsured and underinsured populations, and many are seeing long waits to get a primary care appointment.  Read more

Ecodriving

Gov. Timothy M. Kaine participated in discussions on energy and transportation on Sunday in Williamsburg and highlighted the benefits of the EcoDriving program—a comprehensive, nationwide effort to save consumers money at the gas pump, reduce fuel use and cut carbon dioxide emissions. The discussions took place during the annual meeting of the Southern Governors’ Association. Read more

The Honey Dewdrops to perform at the Hamner Theater

Back in town after their 15-state tour (17 shows in 45 days), The Honey Dewdrops, Laura Wortman and Kagey Parrish, will appear in the Hamner Theater’s Cabaret series on Saturday, Aug. 29.
Laura Wortman and Kagey Parrish have been making music for six years. They play original and American traditional songs focusing on vocal harmonies and tight instrumentation. In 2008, they won the Prairie Home Companion’s People in Their Twenties Talent Show. Recently they’ve been playing alongside performers such as Sarah Lee Guthrie and Johnny Irion, Stacey Earle and Mark Stuart, Uncle Monk, and The Biscuit Burners. Read more

Music programs at EMU

Church leader arrested for alleged sexual battery

A Staunton church leader has been arrested and charged with two counts of aggravated sexual battery involving a 10-year-old girl.
Steven Bruce Joplin, 59, of 448 Cherry Grove Road, Middlebrook, was arrested on Friday, Staunton Police Department spokeswoman Lisa Klein told The Augusta Free Press. Read more
