Deeds makes stop on day one of two-day Augusta swing
Democratic Party gubernatorial candidate Creigh Deeds was in Staunton Thursday on day one of a two-day swing through Staunton and Waynesboro. Deeds addressed 60 local voters at an event at Elder Antique and Classic Automobiles in Downtown Staunton Thursday evening. AFP editor Chris Graham captured the event on video.
Deeds will be in Waynesboro on Friday morning for an 11 a.m. event at the Waynesboro Democratic Party Election ’09 headquarters and an 11:45 a.m. walking tour of Downtown Waynesboro. Read more

Humane Society lauds judge in local puppy-mill case
Just days after The Humane Society of the United States and local authorities removed almost 100 dogs from deplorable conditions at “Oak Leaf Kennel” in Stuarts Draft, an Augusta County General District Court judge barred the puppy mill owner, Kyle Brydge, from keeping or breeding companion animals for at least two years. Brydge had been selling the animals via classified ads. Read more

Chamber names interim president
The Harrisonburg-Rockingham Chamber of Commerce has named an interim president.
Richard “Dick” Morin will serve in the position until a new president is named, the chamber announced today. Morin replaces James Berg, who stepped down for undisclosed reasons on Aug. 18.
Morin’s appointment is effective Thursday. Read more
Stimulus funds to boost efforts to convert to propane
Gov. Timothy M. Kaine this week announced the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 has appropriated significant funding for the Virginia Department of Mines, Minerals and Energy’s Paving the Way with Propane: The AutoGas Corridor Development Program. The AutoGas Corridor Development Program is a unique, progressive project aimed at building the infrastructure for public and private vehicle operators to convert existing vehicles from conventional gasoline to clean propane AutoGas. Unemployment claims dip
In the week ending Aug. 22, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 570,000, a decrease of 10,000 from the previous week’s revised figure of 580,000. The four-week moving average was 566,250, a decrease of 4,750 from the previous week’s revised average of 571,000. Read more
Cash for Clunkers tally: 700K new-car sales
The CARS program came to a close Tuesday night with nearly 700,000 clunkers taken off the roads, replaced by far more fuel efficient vehicles. Rebate applications worth $2.877 billion were submitted by the 8 p.m. Monday deadline, under the $3 billion provided by Congress to run the program. Read more
