Carolyn Perry, 20, and her sister-in-law, Connie Hevener, 19, were doing what they needed to do to close the High’s Ice Cream in Terry Court in Staunton the night of April 11, 1967. They’d had some late customers, including a man later described as “in need of a haircut” and “in bad need of a shave,” and a mystery woman who was apparently at the counter when a coworker not on duty that night entered through a back door ostensibly to tell Hevener that she couldn’t work her shift on Wednesday night. Advisory committee to meet at CCCA Tuesday

VDOT road work schedule for Jan. 26-30
Here is an updated list of highway work projects that might affect traffic in the Staunton Transportation District during the coming weeks. Work scheduled is subject to change due to inclement weather and material supplies. Motorists are advised to watch for slow-moving tractors during mowing operations. Also, when traveling through a work zone, be alert to periodic changes in traffic patterns and lane closures. Read more

Winning on the road in the Atlantic Coast Conference is not supposed to easy. Someone forgot to tell that to Florida State University, as the Seminoles posted an embarrassingly easy 73-62 win over the Virginia Cavaliers Saturday afternoon in John Paul Jones Arena. Read more

Shakespeare Center has a ways to go to reach fund goal
I want to put a positive spin on this story, but I can’t. The American Shakespeare Center has another $100,000 to go to reach its $250,000 goal to cover operating expenses for the month of January, and that Jan. 31 deadline is looming. Read more
Love in the air at Wayne
If you love, have loved or have been loved, the Wayne Theatre Alliiance’s special Valentine’s Day theatrical presentation is for you.
Love Letters is the chronicle of letters written between a couple across their lifetimes. Starring in the show will be Wayne Theatre Alliance executive director Clair Myers and Llyn Walker. The play is being directed by Boomie Pedersen, the co-artistic director of the Hamner Theater in Nellysford. Read more
City making progress on Downtown Wall
The project to replace a city-owned brick wall that has been connected for nearly 40 years to a private Downtown Waynesboro commercial building might be getting a jumpstart.
City manager Mike Hamp told Waynesboro City Council at its monthly work session Wednesday night that he should be prepared to make a recommendation regarding what to do with the wall at the council’s next business meeting next week. Read more
