The ACLU of Virginia today expressed concern about the implementation of Virginia’s new voter ID law, SB 1256, and its impact on voters’ access to the polls. The ACLU provided public comment at this afternoon’s State Board of Elections meeting.

Twenty-five years ago tragedy struck the Harrisonburg community with the death of Shirley Collins. In the aftermath of that act of sexual violence, a dynamic group of people came together to create CASA-Citizens Against Sexual Assault, which is now called the Collins Center. This growing non-profit, located in downtown Harrisonburg, models and promotes the prevention of child sexual abuse, and provides excellence in sexual assault response and treatment in Harrisonburg and Rockingham County.

For all the controversy over the Augusta County School Board maintaining insurance benefits for its own members even as it has cut them for the school system’s part-time employees, the real outrage should be the relatively lavish pay and benefits our elected officials vote for themselves across the board in the first place.

New moms often get frilly, even funny cards and e-greetings for their first Mothers Day. But this Sunday, the first Mothers Day after Newtown, twenty Connecticut mothers will get no sweet, hand-lettered card or chalky clay handprints from a much-beloved young son or daughter. Instead, it will simply be another day to put on a brave face for family and friends, to live through the daily heartache of unbearable loss.

We represent thousands of African American, Hispanic and Native American farmers in the United States and we recognize the importance of as many of our farmers being counted in the agriculture census. It’s with information from the census that the nation learns about the importance of the work we do. This is why we are appealing to everyone who as not yet sent in their census form to please do so. There is still time.

For less than the cost of one murder the crime rate can be easily and significantly reduced. In 2010, researchers at Iowa State concluded that the cost for a single murder in America was $17.25 million. For less than that $17.25 million, American’s can easily and effectively reduce not only murders, but also rapes, robberies and other violent crimes quickly, significantly, and effectively, while saving ourselves a few billion dollars in the process. Perhaps most importantly, effectively deploying these tools might even have stopped a terrorist act like the Boston Marathon bombing.

Virginia Living’s second annual Best of Virginia issue is now on newsstands. The statewide guide to all that is ‘best’ in Virginia from dining to shopping to doing, Best of Virginia 2013 lists the more than 1,200 winners from Virginia Living’s second annual Best of Virginia Readers’ Survey conducted in January. More than 25,000 votes were cast in 400 categories covering the best in arts, culture and entertainment, living and recreation, shopping and services, and food and drink across the state.

U.S. Sen. Tim Kaine, a member of the Armed Services Committee, pressed top United States Air Force officials in a hearing today on the issue of sexual assault in the military including the arrest of Lt. Col. Jeffrey Krusinski, chief of the Air Force Sexual Assault Prevention and Response branch, on charges of sexual battery in Arlington, Virginia. In his questioning, Kaine expressed his concern over the signal these news accounts send to current and future servicemembers, noting his recent visit with female cadets at Mary Baldwin College in Staunton.
