longwood logoLongwood University first-year men’s basketball head coach Jayson Gee has announced the appointment of Andy Farrell as a new assistant coach.  Farrell previously served as the director of basketball operations and assistant recruiting coordinator at DePaul University from 2011-13 after one year as the Blue Demons’ video coordinator (2010-11).  He was also the video coordinator at Clemson University (2008-10), following a year as a graduate assistant coach and assistant to the video coordinator at Virginia Commonwealth University (2007-08).

“Coach Farrell brings a wealth of high major experience to our program and instant credibility in our marketplace,” said Gee.  “He is an innovator, a great communicator and he worked harder than anyone to land this opportunity (he mailed me 40 handwritten letters in one day).  Andy will be our recruiting coordinator because of his relentless work ethic and extensive contacts in our recruiting breadbasket. He is a star in the making as a coach and will be a tremendous role model for our student athletes.”

At DePaul in his most-recent role, Farrell completed non-conference scheduling, coordinated team travel, formulated self-scouting offensive and defensive efficiencies, created and distributed recruiting materials, organized spring and summer recruiting schedules, coordinated all recruiting visits, and contributed to pre-game preparations, scouting and strategy.  In his prior role, he handled advanced scouting, created video scouting edits, initiated and drafted a proposal for a conference-wide open film exchange policy, and helped coordinate and operate summer camps.

“I’m blessed to have the opportunity to work for Coach Gee and the Longwood Athletics Department, as a part of the Farmville community,” said Farrell.  “I cannot wait to be a part of the journey that takes Longwood to the next level, and work with our student-athletes both on and off the court.  I’m excited to get started and represent the university with the work ethic and dedication.”

Farrell is also the co-founder of Rising Coaches Elite, organizing a three-day conference for men’s college basketball support staff in Las Vegas over the past three years.  He assisted with editing opponent game tapes, managed film exchange and assisted with individual workouts and conditioning while at VCU, where he served as the showcase coordinator and director for the VCU International Basketball Showcase in 2008.

Farrell was involved with the University of Dayton men’s basketball team from 2003-07, serving as both a student manager and head student manager.  He assisted with the daily operations of the program, supervised equipment and assisted with team travel.  Farrell served as marketing director and camp coordinator for UD women’s basketball’s Jim Jabir Summer Camp from 2005-07.

The Dayton, Ohio native earned Bachelor of Science degrees in Economics and Finance from Dayton in 2007, graduating magna cum laude while a Dean’s List recipient each semester.  He received a Master of Education in Sport Leadership from the Center for Sport Leadership at VCU in 2009.
