U.S. Sen. Tim Kaine (D-VA) visited Slaughter Pen battlefield today to announce his second bill, the American Battlefield Protection Program Amendments Act. The bipartisan bill introduced by Kaine and Sen. Thad Cochran (R-MS) during the sesquicentennial of the Civil War will preserve historical battlegrounds by reauthorizing the Civil War Battlefield Preservation Program (CWBPP) that provides competitive federal grants to match private and non-profit donations.

The Virginia Commonwealth University Board of Visitors today approved a 2013-2014 budget that includes a tuition increase, a new market-based tuition pricing structure for incoming students and significant measures to cut costs and reallocate savings to the university’s core academic mission.

Virginia starting shortstop Branden Cogswell (So., Ballston Lake, N.Y.) will miss the next two weeks because of a fractured finger. Cogswell broke the middle finger on his right hand (throwing hand) last Saturday in practice and underwent surgery to repair the break.

The Frontier Culture Museum announced today that the museum has been awarded a $100,000 grant from the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development to undertake the Virginia Artisan Center Planning Project.

Del. Dickie Bell (R-Staunton), a retired special education teacher, encourages teachers to apply for the newly created Governor’s Teacher Cabinet. The Cabinet, comprised of teachers from across the Commonwealth, will advise the governor and Secretary of Education on policies related to the status of teaching in Virginia.
