Staunton Senior Center member Grace McGovern won a quilted wall hanging during the SSC Open House. The raffle and Open House were part of SSC’s celebration of Older American’s Month. The week of special events concluded with the Senior Ms. Virginia pageant in the Ntelos Theater of Gypsy Hill Place on May 17.

Virginia Republicans formally nominated Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli to run for governor in 2013, and added as his ticketmates Mark Obenshain, a Harrisonburg state senator, as the attorney-general nominee, and E.W. Jackson, a Chesapeake-based Baptist minister, as the nominee for lieutenant governor.

The Virginia men’s tennis team reached the semifinals of the NCAA Tournament for the fourth consecutive year and for the sixth time in the past seven years with a 4-0 victory over Tennessee in a quarterfinal match Saturday at the Khan Outdoor Tennis Complex. The Cavaliers (28-0) will meet Georgia in the semifinals on Monday, while the Volunteers end their season at 23-8.

The UVa. women’s lacrosse team’s season came to an end in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Women’s Lacrosse Championship with a 13-9 loss at No. 3 North Carolina.

Second-ranked North Carolina scored six runs in the eighth inning to rally from a 5-2 deficit and knock off the No. 7-ranked Virginia baseball team, 8-5, Friday night in front of a sellout crowd of 4,100 at Boshamer Stadium in Chapel Hill. UVa. (44-9, 21-8) had its six-game win streak snapped as the Tar Heels (47-7, 21-6 ACC) evened the series at a game apiece and also clinched the ACC Coastal Division title.

The Virginia Department of Transportation’s emergency project on Interstate 64 at Afton Mountain will resume on Monday, May 20 and continue through Thursday, May 23. Intermittent closures of I-64 will begin at 8:30 a.m. each day and continue throughout the day.
