Gov. Terry McAuliffe signed Executive Order Number 1 at the Capitol of Virginia on Saturday, which prohibits discrimination based on race, sex, color, national origin, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, age, political affiliation, or against otherwise qualified persons with disabilities in Virginia state government.

The ACLU of Virginia today released its 2014 General Assembly Session policy priorities by hand-delivery to all legislator offices. The organization has prioritized several legislative initiatives that will advance the civil rights and liberties of all Virginians.

“If [Governor-elect] Mr. McAuliffe thinks he can usurp powers of the legislature, he’s courting a divorce before the honeymoon… this is Virginia, not Washington.” That’s what I told the Charlottesville NBC affiliate recently when asked to comment about McAuliffe’s plan to extend special protections to certain classes of state employees.

A same-sex couple’s inability to get a veterans’ home loan in Virginia has prompted U.S. Sen. Mark Warner (D-VA) to ask the Obama administration to move more quickly to eliminate discrimination in federal programs.

Friends of Mark Warner, the 2014 campaign of U.S. Sen. Mark R. Warner of Virginia, announced its year-end fundraising numbers today. During the fourth quarter of 2013, the campaign received contributions totaling nearly $1.6 million. Friends of Mark Warner ended 2013 with more than $7.1 million cash-on-hand.
