The bipartisan budget deal reached by House and Senate negotiators earlier this week passed the House by a 332-94 vote Thursday evening. Sixth District Congressman Bob Goodlatte used the news of the vote to go on an odd attack aimed at Senate Democrats and President Obama.

Continuing his administration’s four-year effort to make college more affordable and accessible for Virginia students, Gov, Bob McDonnell announced today that his FY 2015/2016 budget will include $183.1 million over the biennium in new support of Virginia’s colleges and universities.

Gov. Bob McDonnell today announced that his upcoming budget will contain considerable new funding to support Virginia’s ongoing homelessness reduction and prevention efforts. The governor will call for over $9.5 million in additional funding for the Virginia Housing Trust Fund, the Rapid Re-Housing Program, and efforts to further enhance data collection.

Former Waynesboro General Erik Kratz has been traded to the Toronto Blue Jays after three seasons with his hometown Philadelphia Phillies. Kratz, a catcher, was traded along with minor league pitcher Rob Rasmussen for relief pitcher Brad Lincoln. Kratz, an EMU alum, will battle for the backup catcher spot with returner Josh Thole.

The UVa. women’s basketball team (3-4) fell to Kansas State (3-3), 49-46, in the consolation final of the Junkanoo Jam Tournament on Grand Bahama Island. Junior center Sarah Imovbioh (Abuja, Nigeria) had her fourth double-double of the season with 20 points, one shy of matching her career high, and 15 rebounds.

The State Board of Elections voted unanimously Monday to certify Democrat Mark Herring as the winner in the hotly-contested state attorney general race. Herring defeated Republican Mark Obenshain by 165 votes out of the more than 2.2 million votes cast in the Nov. 5 election, easily the closest margin percentage-wise in state political history.

U.S. Sens. Mark Warner (D-Va.), Susan Collins (R-Maine), Tim Kaine (D-Va.) and Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) introduced proposals today to strengthen military whistleblower protection laws to ensure those who are courageous enough to report sexual assault and other misconduct are not further victimized by retaliation.

It’s hard to believe that it has been nearly four years since I was given the tremendous opportunity to serve as Virginia’s 14th Commissioner of Agriculture and Consumer Services. Teaming up with Gov. Bob McDonnell and Secretary of Agriculture and Forestry Todd Haymore to help lead the Commonwealth’s number one industry has truly been one of the greatest experiences of my life.
