The midpoint of the 2015 General Assembly Session has passed. We are nearing crossover, the point when the Senate and House of Delegates must complete work on bills generated by its members. While the budget remains the focus, a number of controversial issues have come before the Senate thus far.

U.S. Senator Tim Kaine joined U.S. Senator Bob Menendez and Congresswoman Elizabeth Esty (D-CT) today to introduce the Large Capacity Ammunition Feeding Device Act, a common-sense bill that bans the importation, sale, manufacture, transfer, or possession of magazines that hold more than ten rounds of ammunition and are designed for shooting en masse.

House Republican members of Subcommittee #1 of the House Committee for Militia, Police, and Public Safety voted to kill legislation carried by Democratic Leader David Toscano (D-57) to provide resources for voluntary background checks to be conducted for sales between individuals at gun shows.

Less than two weeks into the General Assembly session, Republican lawmakers have resorted to backroom deals in order to kill a package of gun safety bills in an effort to avoid attracting attention from the media and public.

The Virginia Senate defeated legislation, SB 1132, which would have allowed individuals with concealed handgun permits to carry loaded firearms on school property outside of regular school hours.

This afternoon, the Senate defeated Senator Tom Garrett’s (R-Buckingham) SB 1132, a bill to allow guns onto school property outside of “normal school hours” – that is, at times when communities of faith, civic organizations, and other outside groups could easily be using school facilities.

A Virginia House committee today refused to take common-sense steps to keep firearms out of the hands of dangerous individuals who have been convicted of crimes including domestic violence, sexual battery and stalking.

In a dramatic turn of events, the Senate Courts of Justice Committee voted 10-4 today to approve SB 943, a bill that would prohibit those convicted of misdemeanor crimes of domestic violence, sexual battery, and stalking from purchasing and possessing firearms.
