Mathers Construction is in the spirit of giving and has joined the Valley Businesses Give Back effort to raise money and gather donated food for the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank. This week, United Rentals and Fastenal dropped off donations at the Mathers office in Waynesboro to go toward Valley Businesses Give Back.

Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli gave a grant of $245,000 to buy bulletproof vests for local Virginia law enforcers who do not currently have them. He presented the funds to the Bedford County Sheriff’s Office to help establish a program to provide protective equipment to law enforcement agencies that are unable to afford them for their own officers.

The Virginia Fly Fishing & Wine Festival has a new online presence with a new website produced by Augusta Free Press. The website features details on the upcoming 14th annual Festival, which takes place in Waynesboro, Va., the weekend of April 12-13, 2014. Over 50 onsite exhibitors will have the latest in fly fishing equipment, fly tying and guide services. Beginner to expert anglers will enjoy nonstop lectures on where, when and how to fly fish in the Mid-Atlantic and beyond.

Augusta Free Press has rebuilt the website for the Shenandoah Area Agency on Aging. AFP worked with SAAA to achieve a custom redesign of the existing website, which features detailed information on the nonprofit organization that provides high quality services and opportunities that enhance the dignity and independence of seniors.

Augusta Health has renewed its annual marketing contract with Augusta Free Press to occupy the prime advertising space on the news website AugustaFreePress.com. Augusta Health is an independent, nonprofit community hospital whose mission is to promote the health and well-being of our community through access to excellent care.

Fishburne Military School’s postgrad basketball team is ranked #2 in the Dec. 2 NextUp Recruits national PG basketball poll. FMS (9-1) swept three games at the Nov. 15-17 Kiski School National Prep Tourney and two games at the Nov. 22-23 NERR Prep Showcase, including a 74-69 overtime win over #6 New Hampton on Nov. 23.

A neighborhood health event, Healthy Connections, will be held on Thursday, Dec. 12 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at the Waynesboro Boys & Girls Club. The event is a cooperative project of Augusta Health, Augusta Free Clinic, the Boys and Girls Club, Med Assist, Enroll Virginia, the Valley Community Services Board, and local providers.

The community may soon add a new verb to their vocabulary: geek. The Valley Libraries Consortium consisting of Augusta County Library, Staunton Public Library, and Waynesboro Public Library will be participating in Geek the Library, a community‐based public awareness campaign.

The Shenandoah Valley Art Center, during the month of December, is exhibiting the watermedia paintings of Staunton artist, Billie Rosenburger, whose mediations on color yield cheerful bright imagery. An Opening Reception and Artist Talk will be held Dec. 7, 6-8 p.m., and the public is encouraged to come and meet the artist.

Music impresario Gary Kirby has arranged for a special performance of Becca and the Cherokee Revival at WTA’s Gateway at 8 pm on Saturday, Dec. 7. “Becca has the power behind the vocals to deliver a song that will send cold chills down your spine and with Cherokee Revival creates a sound not to be forgotten,” says Kirby.
