The Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) presented the organization’s Distinguished Service Award to two statewide legends in the field of athletic communications. Rich Murray of the University of Virginia and Dave Smith of Virginia Tech received the honor at VaSID’s annual meeting on June 6 at Randolph-Macon College in Ashland.

Today during an awards ceremony held at Hunton & Williams LLP, Gov. Bob McDonnell announced the nine winners of the 2013 Governor’s Volunteerism and Community Service Awards recognizing individuals and organizations for their extraordinary volunteer efforts that contribute to the life and welfare of citizens throughout the Commonwealth.

As Bridgewater College’s graduating seniors and their families celebrated on the campus mall Saturday, May 18, Virginia Supreme Court Justice William C. Mims urged the 301 graduates to remember society’s timeless virtues and to build meaningful lives.

Before moving to Staunton last summer, Robert E. Lee High School social studies teacher Jennifer Goss had the privilege of documenting the story of Holocaust survivor, Frank Grunwald. The resulting film, Misa’s Fugue, has since garnered several awards and been selected to play in several prestigious film festivals throughout the world.

Stuart Hall School will begin its Alumnae/i Weekend with a special wreath laying memorial service to honor former students and faculty who have died. Of special mention will be Renee Smith Gatling, Class of 1973, the first African American student to graduate from the School, and Lance Cpl. Jason C. Redifer, Class of 2003, one of the first males to attend the Upper School at Stuart Hall.

Renee Pullen, the SANE—sexual assault nurse examiner—nurse at Augusta Health, and the ambulance crew at the Fishersville facility drove down to Lexington this week to receive a donation of Fear 2 Freedom kits from the local chapter at Washington and Lee University.

As we celebrate Women’s History month, we should pay homage to a resolute group of women who deserve recognition during Sunshine Week, another March event. Sunshine Week calls attention to journalists who courageously brought to light information that governmental and other authorities prefer to keep hidden. Their notable ranks include women who have insisted for nearly two centuries on their right to cover the nation’s capital in spite of prejudice against their gender.

As what usually happens with a coaching change, EMU’s first-year skipper, Ben Spotts, is starting at the ground floor. Spotts is taking a Royals program which hasn’t had a winning season since 2002, using the good pieces already in place, and implementing his style.

A Muslim scholar from Iran is teaching at Eastern Mennonite University this academic year as part of a new three-year visiting scholar series. Amir Akrami, from the Iranian Institute of Philosophy in Tehran, is teaching two courses during the spring semester 2013 – “Introduction to Islam” and “Issues in Islam.”

Gov. Bob McDonnell Wednesday announced the membership of his newly-created Task Force of School and Campus Safety. The membership includes educators, public safety experts, local leaders, mental health practitioners, legislators, parents, and students.
