Hank Houston of Spotsylvania County grew the largest entry in this year’s Giant Pumpkin Contest at the State Fair of Virginia; his pumpkin weighed 1,203.2 pounds. The previous record, set in 2007, was 1,138 pounds for a pumpkin grown by William Layton of Nelson County.

Route 250 (Rockfish Gap Turnpike) and Route 151 (Critzers Shop Road) are closed at their intersection on Afton Mountain, near the Albemarle-Nelson county line. A tanker truck hauling milk has overturned and spilled approximately 3,000 gallons onto the roadway.

On Wednesday, May 7, the members of the Waynesboro City Council (Mayor Bruce Allen, Vice Mayor Tim Williams, Councilman Mke Harris, Councilman Frank Lucente, and Councilman Jeff Freeman), may attend a presentation of the Crozet Tunnel given by Allen Hale, Nelson County Supervisor, at 10 a.m. in Council Chambers, 503 West Main Street, Waynesboro.

Photographs obtained by Virginia State Police has law enforcement gravely concerned about the safety of a missing Nelson County man. State and local police have been searching for Kevin Wayne Quick, 45, since he was reported missing Saturday (Feb. 1, 2014) by family.

The Waynesboro Police Department is assisting with the investigation into a missing person’s case involving a 45-year-old Nelson County man who is also a Waynesboro Police Department police reserve.

A special Nelson County grand jury has indicted Linda Campbell Blackwell of 18 Creekview Lane, Lovingston, on charges of arson, obtaining money by false pretenses, and felony murder relating to a house fire that occurred on Aug. 2, 2009, killing James Shelton Sr.

Virginia’s reputation as a destination full of local flavor has a new experience to tout with the first-ever August Virginia Craft Beer Month. The month’s theme, Love on Tap, is a nod to the state’s famous Virginia is for Lovers slogan and local craft beer on tap at more than 40 breweries and hundreds of restaurants across Virginia. The month-long celebration culminates with the first-ever Virginia Craft Brew Festival August 25 at Devils Backbone Brewery in Nelson County
