The State Board of Elections voted unanimously Monday to certify Democrat Mark Herring as the winner in the hotly-contested state attorney general race. Herring defeated Republican Mark Obenshain by 165 votes out of the more than 2.2 million votes cast in the Nov. 5 election, easily the closest margin percentage-wise in state political history.

RMH, in conjunction with the American Red Cross, is hosting a three-day blood drive Nov. 25, 26 and 27 on the RMH Health Campus in Harrisonburg. On Nov. 25 and 26, the Red Cross Bloodmobile will be taking donations from noon – 6 p.m. in Parking Lot A. The bloodmobile will be located near the entrance of the RMH Heart and Vascular Center.

The following is a list of highway work that might affect traffic in the Staunton VDOT transportation district during the coming weeks. The Staunton district is comprised of 11 counties, Alleghany, Bath, Rockbridge, Augusta, Highland, Rockingham, Shenandoah, Frederick, Page, Warren and Clarke.

I’ll take friendly issue here with my friend and colleague Andy Schmookler for his recent column on the still too-close-to-call Virginia attorney general race (“Andy Schmookler: I’m betting on Mark Obenshain acting honorably,” Nov. 21 AFP). I don’t see any dishonor if Obenshain decides after a recount to contest the result in the Virginia General Assembly.

Earlier this month, an alarm about Virginia’s razor-close Attorney General’s race sounded in some Democratic circles. Adam Swerver, in an article posted on the MSNBC website, declared that even if the defeat of Republican candidate Mark Obenshain is confirmed in a recount, he might still be able to have himself declared the winner.

JMU baseball head coach Spanky McFarland announced today the addition of four new student-athletes to the program after each signed a national letter of intent during the NCAA fall signing period. The new student-athletes include three from Virginia. The group features two left-handed pitchers and two infielders.

VDOT will open Route 727 (Airport Road) in Rockingham County on Friday. Contractors from Fairfield-Echols LLC of Fishersville have substantially completed the project just west of Route 11 at Mount Crawford. The work included construction of a new bridge over the North River and realigning part of the road to eliminate two sharp curves.

JMU pulled away with a 9-0 run to close the first half and got a career-high 19 points from sophomore forward Taylor Bessick (Philadelphia, Pa./Rise Academy) in a 79-66 victory over San Jose Stateon Sunday afternoon on the final day of the NIU Invitational at the NIU Convocation Center.
