Gov. Bob McDonnell announced today a significant development to ease congestion and increase safety on I-64 in the Hampton Roads and Richmond regions. The Federal Highway Administration has signed the Final Environmental Impact Statement, which supports the future widening of 75 miles of I-64 from I-95 in Richmond to I-664 in Hampton.

Fishburne Military School’s postgrad basketball team is ranked #2 in the Dec. 2 NextUp Recruits national PG basketball poll. FMS (9-1) swept three games at the Nov. 15-17 Kiski School National Prep Tourney and two games at the Nov. 22-23 NERR Prep Showcase, including a 74-69 overtime win over #6 New Hampton on Nov. 23.

Virginia football player Anthony Harris was named to the All-Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) football first team, announced by the league on Monday. Running back Kevin Parks was named to the second team, offensive tackle Morgan Moses was named to the third team and defensive tackle Brent Urban was an honorable mention selection.

WTA’s Gateway in Waynesboro will bring The Concise Dickens’ Christmas Carol as part of WTA’s Holiday entertainment. The seasonal favorite of Hampton Roads’ audiences will be presented on Friday, Dec. 13 and Saturday, Dec. 14. The acting troupe of Ebenezer Scrooge and Co. is in the single person of actor/writer D.D. Delaney, who plays 22 roles.

A 28-5 second-half run broke open a close game and pushed Virginia to a 75-53 win over in-state foe Liberty on Saturday. The ‘Hoos (4-1) led by as many as 12 points in the first half before the Flames cut into the lead with a 14-4 run. A late bucket by Darion Atkins put the lead at 32-26 at the half.

Virginia Gov.-elect Terry McAuliffe on Friday announced his selection of Aubrey Layne as Secretary of Transportation at the Norfolk International Terminal. Layne, a resident of Virginia Beach, has been a member of the Commonwealth Transportation Board since 2009.

The Fishburne Military School postgraduate basketball team swept the weekend at the Kiski School (Pa.) National Prep Tourney. The Caissons defeated Propel Charter (Pa.) 108-23 on Friday, Rise Academy (N.C.) 67-45 on Saturday and the home team Kiski School 67-65 on Sunday.

Gov.-elect Terry McAuliffe announced his “Common Ground for Virginia” transition committee on Thursday, a bipartisan group of Virginians from all regions of the Commonwealth who will work with McAuliffe over the next two months to build the foundation for a successful administration.
