ODU football signs 24 on National Signing Day

odu logoODU football Head Coach Bobby Wilder announced that 24 student-athletes signed on Wednesday to play football for the Monarchs in the fall of 2014. The 24 student-athletes that signed today join the seven commitments that Old Dominion signed at the mid-year period in December and are already enrolled in classes.

 

Daniel Appouh – 6-4, 230 – DE – Germantown, Md./Seneca Valley

Earned first-team All-State and All-Montgomery County honors … Named League Defensive Player of the Year … As a senior, recorded 93 tackles, 20 tackles for loss and nine sacks … For his career, notched 154 tackles, 13 sacks, three forced fumbles and a fumble recovery … Played in the Army National Guard Crab Bowl, Washington vs. Baltimore … Recorded a sack in the game and helped his team to a win … Selected to the prestigious Big 33 All-Star Game between Pennsylvania and Maryland … His cousin plays at Nebraska and his brother played at Penn State.

Poncho Barnwell – 6-4, 260 – DE – Rochester, N.Y./East/Nassau CC

Ranked as the No. 13 recruit from New York … Recorded 53 tackles, 7.5 sacks and recovered two fumbles this past year at Nassau CC … Earned Section V Defensive Player of the Year honors as a high school senior … Named First-Team All-Greater Rochester and First-Team All-City Catholic.

Shuler Bentley – 6-1, 200 – QB – Duncan, S.C./Byrnes

Named USA Today Parade All-American Honorable Mention … A 4-Star recruit by 247 Sports and 3-Star by Rivals …Named MVP of the South Carolina vs. North Carolina All-Star Game … Played in the Offense vs. Defense All-American Game in Orlando, Fla. … Two-Time South Carolina Gatorade Player of the Year … Set a South Carolina single-season high school record with 71 touchdown passes as a senior … Completed 293-of-425 passes for 5,032 yards this past season … Helped lead Byrnes to a 12-2 record and the state semifinals … Tied a South Carolina High School record with nine touchdown passes in an 82-49 victory over Woodruff, which also tied for the nation’s best among high school QB’s this past season … Was 299-of-462 for 4,718 yards and a then state single-season record of 59 touchdown passes … Was named Max Preps Second-Team junior All-America … Led Byrnes to a state championship as a sophomore … Passed for 3,495 yards on 235-of-363 passing and 47 touchdowns … For his career, was 827-of-1,250 and a state record 13,245 yards and also a state record of 177 career TD tosses.

A 3-Star recruit by ESPN, Rivals and 247 Sports … Earned First-Team All-757 honors at defensive back … Named First-Team All-Beach District DB … A four-year starter at Tallwood … Helped Tallwood win four-straight games to end the season and make the playoffs … His junior year, recorded 65 tackles, four tackles for loss, seven pass breakups and one interception, while missing three games.
