#1 UVa. women’s soccer downs Georgetown, 1-0, now in NCAA Sweet 16

The top-seeded Virginia women’s soccer team advanced to the third round of the NCAA Tournament with a 1-0 victory over Georgetown Friday night in front of 1,988 fans at Klöckner Stadium. Junior midfielder Morgan Brian’s goal in the 33rd minute was all the Cavs needed to reach the round of the 16 for the ninth consecutive season.

On Saturday, Dec. 7 from 11 a.m. until noon, the Augusta County Historical Society is sponsoring Staunton storyteller and folk musician Bill Wellington in a program on the second floor of the R.R. Smith Center for History & Art. Wellington is hoping that his program, “Poetic Justice,” will finally give this Revolutionary patriot his just due.

Virginia rolls to easy 67-42 win over Navy

Anthony Gill had 18 points on 8-of-9 shooting, Joe Harris had 16 on 7-of-8 shooting, and Virginia dominated the boards against a smaller Navy team en route to posting a 67-42 win Tuesday in Charlottesville. UVa. (3-1) went on a 13-0 run to open up a 30-12 lead at the 2:01 mark of the first half. Navy (2-3) didn’t get any closer than 14 the rest of the way.

Augusta Free Press editor Chris Graham was courtside at the John Paul Jones Arena in Charlottesville for tonight’s basketball game between UVa. (3-1) and Navy (2-3), won by Virginia by a 67-42 final. Anthony Gill had 18 points (8-9 FG) for Virginia, while Joe Harris had 16 points (7-8 FG), and Mike Tobey and Malcolm Brogdon each had 13 (each 6-10 FG). UVa. shoots 56.6 percent from the field and outrebounds Navy 40-19.

UVa. artificial pancreas project receives $3.4 million grant

A high-tech project to turn an ordinary smart phone into an artificial pancreas that could transform the lives of people with type 1 diabetes has received a $3.4 million grant from the National Institutes of Health. The money will fund a new network approach to artificial pancreas design using distributed computing between local and Cloud systems.

UVa. women’s basketball defeats Louisiana Tech, 95-82

The Virginia women’s basketball team (2-1) had its highest scoring output since 2009 as the Cavaliers defeated Louisiana Tech (0-2), 95-82, Saturday afternoon (Nov. 16) at John Paul Jones Arena. The last time UVa scored 95 points in a game was Nov. 18, 2009, a 110-63 win over USC Upstate in Charlottesville.
