Women’s soccer: EMU falls to W&L

emu sportsFacing a tough task Tuesday afternoon at Washington and Lee, EMU responded by holding the ODAC-leading Generals to just two goals in a 2-0 loss. Despite the defeat, EMU’s soccer women kept W&L below their season scoring average and will try to use that as a springboard into the final three games of the season.

Eastern Mennonite (6-8-1/2-5 ODAC) has two key home games in the next seven days, hosting Guilford Saturday at 4:00pmand Randolph next Tuesday evening. At 3-4 in the ODAC, those two teams are tied for eighth place in the league standings and one win (three points) ahead of the Royals.

The top ten teams in the ODAC make the postseason tournament, with the seventh and eighth seeds hosting First Round home games on Monday, Oct. 31.

Washington and Lee, which currently tops the ODAC with 18 points and 6-1 record in league play, put on the offensive pressure from the opening touch. They fired 20 shots over the first half, with keeper Leah Wenger (Harrisonburg, Va./Eastern Mennonite) racking up nine saves in the frame alone. The Generals did put in goals in the 13th and 35th minutes to gain the advantage.

The Royals steadied up on the field in the second half, limiting their high-powered opponents to just seven shots, with Wenger stopping the only two that came on target. She finished with a career high 11 saves.

Sierra Martin (Glenwood Springs, Colo./Glenwood Springs) fired EMU’s only corner kick, as W&L’s defense kept the women from attempting a shot.
