William and Mary linebacker Luke Rhodes selected to Butkus Award Watch List

AFP

wm-logoHaving established himself as one of the nation’s elite linebackers during the past few years, William and Mary senior Luke Rhodes has been selected to the 2015 Butkus Award Watch List. Rhodes is the lone Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) player on the watch list, which honors the nation’s top collegiate linebackers.

Recently chosen to the STATS FCS Preseason All-America First Team, Rhodes is a two-time first-team all-conference selection and a three-time all-league honoree. During the past two seasons, the Hollidaysburg, Pa., native has totaled 191 tackles, 10.5 tackles for a loss, 5.5 sacks, three forced fumbles, one fumble recovery and 15 PBU.

In addition to excelling against FCS competition, Rhodes has also performed extremely well versus Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) opponents during his career and has averaged 10.0 tackles per game in contests against Virginia Tech, West Virginia and Maryland.

An outstanding leader, Rhodes is a two-time team captain, which makes him just the 11th player to earn the honor multiple times in the program’s 122-year history.

The Butkus Award Watch List features 51 candidates from 35 universities and eight different conferences.

A selection panel of 51 experienced coaches, evaluators and journalists will narrow the field by private ballot. Semifinalists will be named on Nov. 2, while finalists will be chosen on Nov. 23. The winner will be announced in early 2016.
