Who’s winning the battle for the #2 QB spot on the UVA football depth chart?

Brewer_Connor_15MArizona transfer Connor Brewer seems to have emerged as the #2 quarterback on the UVA football depth chart.

Virginia coach Mike London told reporters on a Thursday conference call that Brewer has taken the second-most snaps of the team’s quarterbacks to this point in training camp, with Corwin Cutler at #3.

Matt Johns is firmly entrenched at the #1 spot after winning a battle for the top job in the spring with last year’s starter, Greyson Lambert, who decided after being demoted to #2 to transfer out, eventually landing at Georgia.

“We know who Matt is, we know what he can do for us. Connor has also put himself in that mix,” London said. “We wanted to make sure that number two, number three, and we had a couple of other situations with quarterbacks, but we’ve solidified who is going to be the guy, and now making sure we get those reps to Connor, and then to Cutler.”

A reporter asked London how different training camp is this year with a clear starter at QB.

“Matt is a guy that our team rallies behind 100 percent. We had a scrimmage the other day, and he did a really nice job. Just the poise, the confidence, knowing who the guy is, is critically important. He’s one of our leaders. He’s a guy, we’ve talked about it over and over, he’s got over a thousand passing yards returning back to the ACC. We feel good about Matt and where we are,” London said.
