There is a renewed threat of snow and ice particularly along the coast in Virginia, but the entire state has some risk for significant snowfall, according to AccuWeather.
“This is a dangerous stretch of winter weather for the eastern half of the nation,” said Carl Erickson, AccuWeather director of forecasting operations. “The combination of extreme cold and back-to-back winter storms in the span of a week raises the risk of widespread and costly disruptions for millions of people.
“There is an increasing risk for a rapidly strengthening coastal storm this weekend,” Erickson said. “Communities along the East Coast still digging out and cleaning up from last weekend’s storm could be hit again with more snow.”
The exact track of the storm is still unknown, but it is expected to strengthen as it moves northeast of the East Coast Saturday.
“How fast the storm strengthens will be a determining factor in the final track of the storm this weekend and whether or not it moves up the East Coast,” said Paul Pastelok, AccuWeather long-range expert.
The region is being impacted by temperatures that are 15 to 30 degrees below historical averages this week, with nighttime lows in the single digits.
The bitter cold is preventing ice from melting and is creating dangerous refreezing conditions overnight.
