Waynesboro Police investigating counterfeit bills

Chris Graham

counterfeitWaynesboro Police have taken reports of counterfeit ten- and twenty-dollar bills that have been passed or almost passed at three local convenience stores over the last three days.

In each case the individual tendering the bills for payment did so unknowingly and cooperated fully in the investigation, including, notifying police themselves in one case.

No point of origin has been determined, but the bills in at least two of the cases were obvious fakes and identified as such at a glance. The other bill was identified by use of a special pen that leaves a distinctive mark on counterfeits.

This information is being released in an effort to warn residents of the increased likelyhood of more counterfeit bills being in circulation in the community.

Additionlly, if anyone has any information concerning the origin of the counterfeit money or who may be responsible for placing the bills in circulation please contact the Waynesboro Police Department at 540-942-6675 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800- 322-2017.
