Colin Bennett scored on a two-out eighth-inning error, Austin Goss got his eighth save of the season, and the Waynesboro Generals maintained sole possession of first place in the Valley League with a 4-3 win over Woodstock Wednesday night at Kate Collins Field.
Bennett (junior, Kennesaw State) reached on a one-out single, and advanced to second on a sacrifice by Kevin Krupp (sophomore, North Georgia). A grounder off the bat of Kyle Pitts (junior, Stetson) glanced off the glove of River Bandits second baseman Mason Snyder into short right field, allowing Bennett to score.
Goss (freshman, USC-Upstate) worked around a leadoff walk to close out the game in the ninth.
Micah Gorman (sophomore, VMI) got the win in relief of starter Jordan Harmon (freshman, Austin Peay), who gave up three runs on five hits in seven innings, striking out six and walking two.
Leadoff man Mike Marcinko (sophomore, Shippensburg) had three hits in five trips to improve his season batting average to .326.
Waynesboro, the defending VBL champ, improves to 12-3 on the season with the win.
The Generals host the Winchester Royals at Kate Collins Field Thursday at 7 p.m.
