Wayne Theatre project update: Cabaret to open, fundraising in critical stage

wtaThanks to the generous support of Jeane Custin and the General Electric Foundation, the restored Wayne Theatre will have its own small performance space.

The newly named Custin Cabaret will allow WTA to continue to offer many of the unique performances it produced at WTA’s Gateway.

“We are so pleased that Jeane Custin has once again worked her magic to make the Cabaret a possibility,” said Bill Hausrath, Chair of the Wayne Theatre Alliance.  “The Custin Cabaret will be a real addition to life in Waynesboro.”

Clair Myers, Executive Director added,  “There are many types of musical and theatrical performances that do not have a large enough draw for the restored Wayne, but which have loyal followings. The Custin Cabaret with its smaller seating capacity will be an ideal venue for them.  Small jazz ensembles, acoustic performances, one-person theatre pieces, etc will all find an intimate home in the Cabaret as well as a welcoming audience.”

The Custin Cabaret will be located at the rear of the second floor of the Wayne.  It will be accessible by elevator and stairs from either the front of the theatre or from the rear.  The space was captured from what was once a storage space in the 1949 expansion of the Wayne.

The Wayne Theatre Alliance is in the final fundraising to complete the requirements for the tax credit loan that will bring $3,000,000 to the restoration project.  The expectation is that this segment of the capital campaign will be completed in August and the closing of the construction loan soon after. Once the reconstruction begins again, the Wayne will open within a year.
