The Nats (73-70) were unable to gain ground in the National League East on the first-place New York Mets, who won their eighth in a row on Monday to maintain a nine and a half game lead, and reduce their magic number to 10.

Washington is also nine and a half games back in the National League wild-card race.

Jayson Werth hit two homers for the Nationals, his eighth and ninth of the season. Anthony Rendon hit his fifth homer run, and Bryce Harper launched his 37th.
