Washington Nationals take opener with Chicago Cubs, 4-1

washington nationalsMax Scherzer was the dominant Max Scherzer in a 4-1 Washington Nationals win over the Chicago Cubs Monday night.

Scherzer (8-4, 3.40 ERA) struck out eight of the first nine batters he faced, didn’t allow a baserunner until the fifth, and finished with 11 strikeouts, no walks and two hits and one run allowed in seven innings of work.

Shawn Kelley (2.70 ERA) earned his first save, striking out four in an inning and two-thirds.

Wilson Ramos (.337/.386/.564) hit a solo homer, his 10th of the season, to break a 1-1 sixth-inning tie. Danny Espinosa (.223/.312/.411) and Ben Revere (.211/.264/.286) each had run-scoring hits later in the sixth for the Nats (40-24).

Kyle Hendricks (4-6, 3.05 ERA) took the loss for the Cubs (43-19), giving up four runs on six hits in five and a third innings.
