Washington Nationals rally, then lose, to Rockies

Chris Graham

washington nationalsJayson Werth kept the Washington Nationals in the game with a two-out, two-strike, ninth-inning RBI single.

Then Bryce Harper got thrown out arguing balls and strikes in the 10th, ahead of Yusmeiro Petit taking one for the team in a five-run Colorado Rockies 11th, in what turned into a 9-4 Nats loss on Saturday.

Petit (3-4, 3.99 ERA, 1.24 WHIP) gave up a pair of two-run homers in his nightmare inning of work, to Charlie Blackmon and Carlos Gonzalez.

Blackmon (.318/.378/.540, 23 HR, 63 RBI) had two homers on the day for the Rockies.

Werth (.251/.346/.441, 18 HR, 59 RBI) was just 1-for-6 on the day, but made the one count, dropping in a soft liner to left-center on a 1-2 pitch from Adam Ottavino to score Trea Turner from second.

Harper (.254/.388/.466, 22 HR, 73 RBI) was 1-for-4 with an RBI double and a run scored, but he was tossed after arguing a called strike three leading off the 10th.

Washington (75-54) has a seven and a half game lead on Miami (67-61) in the NL East.
