generals-front-royal3A bases-loaded walk allowed the winning run to score in an 8-7 win for the Waynesboro Generals over the Front Royal Cardinals Tuesday night at Kate Collins Field.

Front Royal (24-15) had tied the game with a three-spot in the eighth on an RBI single by Omar Cotto and a two-run single by Tyler Tichenor.

Generals reliever Griffin Krieg (2-0) stranded two Cardinals on base in the ninth, setting up the bottom of the ninth for Waynesboro (22-16), which began with a leadoff walk to Cole Gruber and a single by Garrett Russini.

Kyle Pitts struck out for the first out of the Waynesboro ninth, and Dre Gleason was walked intentionally to bring up Bennett, who worked the count to 3-0 in his favor before taking a called strike. The 3-1 pitch missed the zone to push the winning run across.

Russini was 4-for-5 at the plate for Waynesboro, Gleason had two hits in three trips and Gruber was 2-for-2, raising his team-leading batting average to .364.

Waynesboro will host Covington for a doubleheader on Wednesday at Kate Collins Field. The first game begins at 5 p.m., with the second game to commence 30 minutes after the conclusion to the opener.
