vmi_logo2USC catcher Garrett Stubbs was named the winner of the Johnny Bench Award Presented by BaseballSavings.com. To win the award, Stubbs defeated VMI’s Matt Winn and LSU’s Kade Scivicque.

Winn, who graduated in May, hit .304 with 26 extra-base hits, including 14 home runs, in his final collegiate season. The home run total tied for the third-most in Keydet history, and his last was the biggest of all, a game-winner in VMI’s conference tournament victory over UNCG. Winn also ranked in the top-20 in Division I in caught stealing percentage for the majority of the season, finishing at 39.3%, and was the first Keydet upperclassman to make an All-American team outright when he was tabbed for the Louisville Slugger/Collegiate Baseball Third Team in late May.

Winn will now begin his pro career with the San Francisco Giants, the team that drafted him in the 14th round earlier this month.
