VMI announces 2016 football schedule

Chris Graham

vmi footballVMI Football under second-year head coach Scott Wachenheim will open the 2016 season at Akron on September 3. The Keydets announced the 11-game slate Thursday.

It will mark the second straight year that VMI has opened a football season against a Mid-American Conference opponent as the Keydets started the 2015 campaign at Ball State. VMI and Akron will be playing for the first time since 2011.

The Keydets will play four home games and seven road contests. After the opener at Akron, the Keydets will travel to Morehead State (September 10) and Bucknell (September 24) for games sandwiched around a September 17 bye week.

VMI will open its home and Southern Conference schedule October 1 against Mercer. Other games at Foster Stadium include ETSU (October 8), Furman (October 29), and The Citadel (November 12) in the “Military Classic of the South”.

The October 1 home opener is the latest such game the Keydets have played in Lexington since the 1968 season when VMI played host to Villanova on October 5.

All but two 2016 foes (Akron, ETSU) were 2015 VMI opponents.

Tickets for the 2016 home season will go on sale later in the spring and can be accessed at www.vmitickets.com. Kickoffs for the four home games will be 1:30 pm.
