Virginia State Police investigating fatal crash in Nelson County

policecar3At 1:04 a.m., Virginia State Police Trooper W.C. Fugate responded to a single-vehicle crash in Nelson County. The crash occurred Oct. 31 on Route 29 near River Road.

A vehicle, believed to be an SUV, was traveling north on Route 29 when it ran off the right side of the road. The vehicle then overcorrected, spun across the northbound lanes of Route 29 and struck the guardrail off the left side of the highway. The vehicle then overturned through the median and came to rest on its wheels in the southbound lanes of Route 29. Moments later the vehicle caught fire and was immediately engulfed in flames.

The driver and two animals, believed to be dogs, were recovered from the burned vehicle, which was destroyed in the fire.

The driver’s remains were transported to Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Richmond for positive identification, examination and autopsy.

State police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash or has any information on the driver of the vehicle to please contact State Police at 434-352-7128 or #77 on a cell phone, or by email at [email protected].
