The Virginia Quilt Museum continues the Christopher C. Grandle Lecture Series on Saturday, June 11. Pat and Arlan Christ, quilt historians, collectors, and curators of the “American Pride: Eagles and Stars” exhibition, offer two special presentations. First at 10:30, they will speak about the stories behind many of the quilts in the exhibit’s collection. For instance, patriotism is often displayed in the form of eagles and stars, yet a signed star block in the center of a Four Patch quilt or “stuff work” in a Folk Art Bethlehem Star can convey individual, ethnic, or national pride in a unique way.
At 1:30, the Christs will present the telling tale of their journey into a mid-19th century Baltimore Album quilt’s history. The compelling story of this very special wedding quilt sheds light on the life of Captain James Andrew, a steamboat captain on the Chesapeake Bay, and his wife Elizabeth. The Andrews, residents of Baltimore, were wed in 1849, and family history indicates the 25 block quilt was sewn while Elizabeth joined her husband on the steamboat. But that is just the beginning of their story. Share in the fascinating findings of this genealogical quest and a very unique quilt. (Note: The Captain James Andrew Quilt is not part of the museum’s exhibition, and this presentation will be the only opportunity to see it!)
Both lectures will be held at St. Stephen’s United Church of Christ, 358 S. Main St. Harrisonburg, and will be followed by a book signing.
An Artists’ Reception begins at 3:00 at the Virginia Quilt Museum, 301 S. Main St. Browse the five current exhibits with their artists and curators. In addition to the Christs’ exhibition, enjoy “Along the Spice Route” (roots of discovery), “The Fallen” (a memorial exhibition), “A Ray of Sunshine” (shedding light on the Depression Era), and “Presidential Connections” (Virginians and the Whig Party).
