Partners for College Affordability and Public Trust, a national, nonprofit organization committed to elevating the voices of students and parents on issues of college affordability, announced the recipients of their 2018 Virginia Legislators of the Year awards.
Following each legislative session of the Virginia General Assembly, Partners recognizes four members for their distinguished leadership and commitment to promoting college affordability for Virginia’s students and families.
This year, Partners recognized Delegates Jason Miyares and David Reid as “2018 House Legislators of the Year” and Senators Bill DeSteph and Chap Petersen as 2018 Senate Legislators of the Year.
“We are proud to recognize these legislators for their dedication to promoting college affordability,” said Dr. James Toscano, President of Partners for College Affordability and Public Trust. “As the rising cost of college continues to have a harmful effect on Virginia’s students and families, we need strong leaders who will take action to address the issue head on. Though not every bill introduced was successfully passed, we witnessed a watershed year in terms of the number of bills and creative approaches to addressing the problem. We want to thank these legislators for standing up for Virginia families by offering innovative solutions to address rising college costs and ease the burden of its lingering effects.”
Beyond these top four awards, Partners also commends legislative “Champions of College Affordability” who have displayed their support by pressing the case for college affordability during the legislative session. When selecting their annual awardees, Partners considers legislators’ bill patronage, voting records and other examples of leadership, such as courageously speaking up to advance the issue.
