Two State Police troopers were pepper-sprayed this morning by a woman walking in traffic lanes on Interstate 264 in Virginia Beach.

Both troopers were treated at an area hospital and released.

The incident happened after a struggle with a 20-year-old female near Independence Boulevard, according to Virginia State Police.

The troopers responded to reports of a pedestrian walking in traffic lanes on the interstate at 6:20 a.m. The responding officer asked the woman to leave the lanes of travel, but she refused. A second trooper arrived on the scene, and VSP reports she also refused their commands.

A short food pursuit ensued, and as she was being placed into custody, she allegedly pepper-sprayed both troopers. The troopers also received minor scratches in the incident, VSP said.

The woman was taken to an area hospital. Charges are pending.

The incident remains under investigation.
