The Virginia Department of Transportation has set up detour routes for motorists using Route 39 (Maury River Road) in Rockbridge County beginning Monday, July 14. The road will have daytime closures while contractors do slope-reinforcement work in several areas through Goshen Pass.
Route 39 will be closed on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., about five miles west of Rockbridge Baths and 15 miles west of Lexington. During those work hours, drivers will use the following detours:
- Eastbound traffic will be diverted south on Route 780 (Bratton’s Run), east on Route 850 (West Midland Trail), then follow Interstate 64 eastbound to exit 55 at Lexington to rejoin Route 39.
- Westbound traffic will detour onto Interstate 64 westbound at Lexington, take exit 43 to Route 850 west, then Route 780 north to rejoin Route 39.
Recent inspections have prompted VDOT to begin improvements to Route 39 at several sites along the Maury River. At each location, contractors will install a series of “soil nails,” which are concrete-and-steel rods driven horizontally beneath the roadbed. The work is expected to be complete around August 8, 2014. All work is weather permitting.
