VDOT will open Route 727 (Airport Road) in Rockingham County on Friday. Contractors from Fairfield-Echols LLC of Fishersville have substantially completed the project just west of Route 11 at Mount Crawford. The work included construction of a new bridge over the North River and realigning part of the road to eliminate two sharp curves.

rt 727 bridge“I am very excited to see this project get completed,” said Rockingham County Supervisor William B. Kyger, Jr. “I really want to thank the residents in this area and those who use the road on a daily basis for their patience and understanding. VDOT did a great job expediting the project to get it built ahead of schedule. Now we have much better access for our daily use, emergency services, as well as access to Dynamic Aviation.”

VDOT purchased right of way from Dynamic. The total estimated cost of the project is $4.5 million dollars, which includes design and construction.

“This was a very challenging project that proceeded very smoothly,” said Don Komara, VDOT Harrisonburg Residency Administrator. “We had great cooperation from contractors, inspectors and neighbors who helped with right of way.”

The Route 727 project had been scheduled for construction beginning in late 2015. VDOT accelerated the schedule two years ago following a vehicle crash that impacted the bridge and forced its closure.
