VDOT: Local road work schedule for the week of May 27-30

VDOT has sent us its updated schedule for road construction and maintenance for the week of May 27-30.

Albemarle County 


(NEW) Interstate 64 – Mowing. Expect mobile, alternating lane closures with slow-moving equipment in the travel lanes and on the shoulders between mile markers 100 and 131.1. Daily, 8 p.m. to 10 a.m.

(NEW) Interstate 64 – Ditch cleaning. Mobile work zone with left shoulder closures westbound between mile markers 113 and 100. Slow-moving equipment and personnel working close to the travel lanes, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily.

(NEW) Interstate 64 – Bridge inspection. Alternating eastbound and westbound lane closures between mile markers 126.5 and 127, Thursday and Friday, 8 p.m. to 6 a.m.

(NEW) U.S. 29 (Seminole Trail) – Storm drain work. Mobile, alternating lane closures between Route 1403 (Berkmar Drive) and Route 631 (Rio Road West), Thursday, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

(NEW) U.S. 250 (Rockfish Gap Turnpike) – Roundabout construction at the intersection of Route 240 (Three Notch’D Road) and Route 680 (Browns Gap Turnpike). Expect lane closures and flagging operations on all three intersection approaches, nightly, 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.

(NEW) Route 22 (Louisa Road) – Bridge inspection. Expect alternating lane closures between U.S. 250 (Richmond Road) and Route 744 (Hunt Club Road), 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Wednesday.

(NEW) Route 631 (Rio Road West) – Turn lane construction. Right northbound lane and shoulder closed between Route 1456 (Four Seasons Drive) and Route 659 (Woodburn Road), Tuesday through Thursday, 8 p.m. to 6 a.m.

Roadway improvement – Expect alternating lane closures nightly, Monday through Thursday, 9 p.m. to 6 a.m., 10 p.m. Friday to 9 a.m. Saturday, 9 p.m. Saturday to 10 a.m. Sunday, 8 p.m. Sunday to 6 a.m. Monday in the following areas:

  • U.S. 29 (Seminole Trail), between Route 1694 (Branchlands Boulevard) and the Charlottesville city line in the northbound and southbound lanes.
  • U.S. 250 Bypass, between U.S. 29 (Emmet Street) and the Charlottesville city line in the eastbound and westbound lanes.
  • Route 743 (Hydraulic Road), between U.S. 250 Bypass and U.S. 29 in the northbound and southbound lanes.

(UPDATE) Roadway sweeping – Expect mobile, alternating lane closures, 3:30 a.m. to 6 a.m. in the following area:

  • Route 631 (Rio Road West), between U.S. 29 (Seminole Trail) and Route 743 (Earlysville Road/Hydraulic Road) in the eastbound and westbound lanes, Wednesday.

(NEW) Traffic engineering – Expect shoulder closures in the following areas, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. except where noted.

  • Interstate 64 eastbound, mile marker 119.3 to 119.4, Tuesday through Friday.
  • U.S. 29 (Seminole Trail) southbound right shoulder closed between Route 1571 (Research Park Boulevard) and Route 1570 (Northside Drive), Tuesday through Friday.
  • Route 743 (Earlysville Road), northbound right shoulder closed at Route 663 (Buck Mountain Road), Tuesday through Friday.

(UPDATE) Utility work under VDOT permit – Expect lane and shoulder closures in the following area:

  • Route 751 (Brownsville Road), both shoulders closed between Route 240 (Crozet Avenue) and U.S. 250 (Rockfish Gap Turnpike) in the eastbound and westbound lanes, daily, 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Route 601 (Old Ivy Road) – Bridge superstructure repairs. Bridge will be restricted to eastbound traffic during construction. Westbound traffic should follow signed detour around the work. Drivers should go slow and use caution near the work zone. Intermittent night closures will also be in place during construction from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. For detailed detour information, visit Route 601 bridge over U.S. 29/250. Expected completion in the fall of 2026.

Augusta County


Interstate 64

  • *NEW* Mile marker 87 to 100, eastbound and westbound – Overnight single lane closures for pavement marking, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Wednesday and Thursday nights.
  • Mile marker 97 to 87, westbound – Overnight single lane closures for pavement treatment, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. through night of June 26.
  • *UPDATE* Mile marker 98 to 96, westbound – Overnight single-lane closures from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. and daytime shoulder closures from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. for bridge painting. Estimated completion May 31.
  • *UPDATE* Exit 99, eastbound – Narrowing of off-ramp for bridge painting, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. through June 30.

Interstate 81

  • *NEW* Mile marker 205 to 221, northbound and southbound – Overnight single lane closures for pavement marking, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Wednesday and Thursday nights.
  • Mile marker 205 to 219, northbound and southbound – Overnight alternating lane closures at various locations for pavement marker installations, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. nights through May 28.
  • *UPDATE* Mile marker 214 to 217, northbound – Right shoulder closures for shoulder repairs, 12 noon to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, then 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Wednesday to Friday.
  • Mile marker 220 to 222, northbound and southbound – Shoulder closures 24/7. Traffic restrictions are for bridge replacement and roadway construction as part of I-81 southbound auxiliary lane Expected completion in fall 2025. Work zone speed limit 60 miles an hour.
  • *UPDATE* Mile marker 221 to 227, northbound and southbound – Overnight left-lane closures from mile marker 222 to 225 for bridge and guardrail work, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Tuesday through Thursday nights. Exit 221 southbound off-ramp limited to a single lane through summer 2025. Northbound and southbound shoulder closures 24/7 through spring 2026. Traffic restrictions are for I-81 widening project. Work zone speed limit 60 miles an hour.
  • *UPDATE* Mile marker 226 to 230, northbound and southbound – Overnight single-lane closures from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. and daytime shoulder closures from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. for bridge painting. Estimated completion July 31.
  • *UPDATE* Mile marker 233 to 232, southbound – Overnight left lane closures, 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Tuesday through Thursday nights. Daytime right shoulder closures, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday. Traffic restrictions are for soil and rock testing.
  • *UPDATE* Mile marker 234 to 237, northbound and southbound – Overnight left lane closures northbound for installation of concrete barriers, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. through Friday night. Overnight southbound left lane closures for guardrail work, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Wednesday and Thursday nights. Northbound and southbound left shoulder closures 24/7. Work zone speed limit 60 miles per hour. Traffic restrictions are for construction of I-81 truck-climbing lanes.

*NEW* Route 42 (Scenic Highway) – Flagger traffic control between Route 753 (Nash Road) and Route 754 (Badger Road) for utility work, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday.

*UPDATE* Route 250 (Three Notched Mountain Highway) – Westbound right lane closures near I-64 exit 99 interchange for painting of interstate overpass bridges, eastbound and westbound right shoulder closures, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. through May 31.

*UPDATE* Route 252 (Middlebrook Road) – Flagger traffic control between Route 920 (Oak Hill Lane) and Route 693 (Butter Road) for pavement marking, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. through Friday.

Route 254 (Ivy Street, Waynesboro) – Shoulder closures between King Avenue and Waynesboro western city limits for underground utility work, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. through June 30.

Route 602 (Summerdean Road) – Closed to through traffic between Route 603 (Cales Springs Road) and Route 677 (Shemariah Road) for bridge rehabilitation through June 6. Follow posted detour.

*NEW* Route 612 (Laurel Hill Road) – Eastbound and westbound single lane closures between Route 901 (Mill Place Parkway/Lodge Lane) and Route 792 (Indian Mound Road) for maintenance to bridge over I-81, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday.

Route 624 (South Delphine Avenue, Waynesboro) – Shoulder closures between South Oak Lane and Chinquapin Drive through May 2025 for work related to construction of Waynesboro Southern Corridor.

Route 633 (Patton Farm Road) – Flagger traffic control at various locations between Route 610 (Howardsville Turnpike) and Route 639 (Wayne Avenue) for utility work, 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. through May 29.

Route 635 (Barterbrook Road) – Closed between I-81 frontage roads (FR-217 and FR-218) for bridge replacement as part of I-81 southbound auxiliary lane project. Follow posted detour. Expected completion in July 2025.

Route 664 (Lyndhurst Road, Waynesboro) – Shoulder closures between Miami Avenue and Purdue Street for work related to construction of Waynesboro Southern Corridor through June 2025.

*NEW* Route 773 (Westview School Road) – Flagger traffic control between Route 775 (Buttermilk Road) and Route 778 (Knightly Mill Road) for rock and soil testing, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Friday.

*NEW* Route 775 (Buttermilk Road) – Flagger traffic control between Route 11 (Lee Highway) and Route 773 (Westview School Road) for rock and soil testing, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Friday.

Route 5119 (Oak Lane, Waynesboro) – Local traffic only between Lyndhurst Road and Delphine Avenue through May 30 for road work related to Waynesboro Southern Corridor project. Flagger traffic control for local drivers, 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays. Through traffic will be detoured.

Various roads – Mobile traffic control for mowing operations. Flagger traffic control for drainage work, tree removal, shoulder repairs, pavement patching and brush cutting, 7:30 to 3 p.m. weekdays.

Greene County


(NEW) Traffic engineering – Expect right shoulder closures Tuesday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the following areas:

  • U.S. 29 (Seminole Trail), northbound between Route 616 (Carpenters Mill Road) and U.S. 33 (Spotswood Trail).
  • Route 810 (Dyke Road) eastbound at Route 627 (Bacon Hollow Road).

(UPDATE) Utility work under VDOT permit – Expect alternating lane closures in the following areas:

  • Route 230 (Madison Road), between Route 1004 (Childs Road) and Route 1005 (Commonwealth Drive) in the eastbound and westbound lanes daily, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Route 610 (Toms Road), between U.S. 33 (Spotswood Trail) and Route 618 (Heights Hill Road) in the eastbound and westbound lanes, daily, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • Route 623 (Swift Run Road) between U.S. 33 (Stanardsville Bypass) and Route 633 (Amicus Road), 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Rockbridge County


Interstate 64

  • *NEW* Mile marker 47 to 49, eastbound – Right lane closures for erosion stabilization, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday through Friday.

Interstate 81

  • Mile marker 188 to 184, southbound – Overnight alternating lane closures for installation of drainage structures, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. nights through May 29.
  • Mile marker 188 to 192, northbound – Overnight alternating lane closures for paving operations, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. through June 12 nights.
  • *NEW* Mile marker 191 to 195, northbound – Overnight alternating lane closures for paving operations, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. on the nights of June 1 to July 31. Overnight closures as needed for exit 191 entrance ramp from I-64.

Route 11 Business (North Main Street, Lexington) – Flagger traffic control between Massie Street and Hook Lane for utility work, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. through June 27. Traffic restrictions are for pedestrian-access improvement project with scheduled completion in August 2025.

*NEW* Route 712 (Wades Road) – Road closed to through traffic between Route 726 (McElwee Road) and Route 729 (Back Draft Road/Davis Hill Road) for replacement of bridge over Cedar Grove Branch, May 27 – June 19. Follow posted detour.

Various roads – Flagger traffic control for pipe replacement, ditch work, tree removal, shoulder repairs, pavement patching and brush cutting, 7:30 to 3 p.m. weekdays.

Rockingham County


Interstate 81

  • Mile marker 237 to 264, northbound and southbound – Overnight alternating lane closures for pavement marker installations, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. through night of May 28.
  • Mile marker 237 to 238, northbound and southbound – Overnight left lane closures northbound for installation of concrete barriers, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. through Friday night. Continuous left shoulder closures through end of 2025. Work zone speed limit 60 miles per hour. Traffic restrictions are for construction of I-81 truck-climbing lanes.
  • *NEW* Mile marker 239 to 240, northbound and southbound – Overnight alternating lane closures for inspection of North River bridge, 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Wednesday and Thursday nights.
  • *NEW*Exit 240, northbound and southbound – Overnight on- or off-ramp closures for paving operations, 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. nights of May 27 – June 5. Follow posted detour.
  • Exit 240, northbound and southbound – Shoulder closures along ramps to and from Route 257 for construction of additional turn lanes, 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. through July 1.
  • Mile marker 242 to 248, northbound and southbound – Occasional overnight ramp and lane closures as needed, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Shoulder closures in place 24/7. Traffic restrictions are for Route 33 bridge and interchange projectwith completion expected in fall 2026.

*NEW* Route 33 (Rawley Pike) – Shoulder closures near Route 701 (Cooks Creek Road/ Silver Lake Road) intersection for sign work, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday.

*UPDATE* Route 33 (Rawley Pike) – Flagger traffic control between Route 613 (Clover Hill Road/Whitmore Shop Road) and Route 752 (Hinton Road) for pavement marking, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. through Friday.

Route 33 (Rawley Pike) – Flagger traffic control between Laurel Woods Lane and Switzer Lake Road/Skidmore Fork for paving, line-painting and guardrail work related to road widening and curve improvements, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. through July 1.

Route 33 (East Market Street, Harrisonburg) – Single-lane traffic between MLK Jr. Way and I-81 interchange. Two lanes in each direction between I-81 interchange and Linda Lane/Burgess Road. Be alert for travel-lane shifts. Shoulder closures 24/7. Traffic restrictions are for Route 33 bridge replacements and interchange improvement with expected completion in September 2026.

Route 253 (Port Republic Road) – Temporary traffic signal between Route 1601 (New Haven Road) and Route 1605 (Water Street) for maintenance to North River bridge, 24/7 through June 30. Vehicle width restriction 11 feet.

*UPDATE* Route 257 (Ottobine Road/Mason Street) – Flagger traffic control between Route 748 (Thomas Spring Road) and Route 1211 (Main Street, Dayton) for pavement marking, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. through Friday.

*NEW* Route 620 (Indian Trail Road/Mountain Valley Road) – Flagger traffic control between Route 722 (Armentrout Path) and Route 811 (Fridleys Gap Road) for tree trimming, 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Route 644 (Resort Drive) – Closed between Silverstone Lane and Woodstone Drive for paving operations and turn-lane construction, through about July 31. Follow posted detour.

Route 682 (Friedens Church Road) – Eastbound and westbound single lane closures between I-81 interchange and Route 867 (North River Road) for road widening project, 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. through July 1.

Various roads – Mobile traffic control for mowing operations. Flagger traffic control for pipe replacement, ditch work, tree removal, shoulder repairs, pavement patching and brush cutting, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays.
