VDOT: Flashing yellow arrow coming to Albemarle, Fauquier

Chris Graham

yellow signalThe Virginia Department of Transportation will soon implement new traffic signal displays at three local intersections to make left turns safer and more efficient. The new signals use a flashing yellow arrow instead of a solid green ball to indicate that drivers may turn left after yielding to oncoming traffic.

Installation of a flashing yellow arrow signal will occur overnight on Tuesday, Sept. 8 on Route 250 at Route 22 in the Shadwell area of Albemarle County. Traffic disruption will be minimal, but motorists are asked to be mindful of workers near the roadway and obey lane closures and other traffic controls.

Installations will follow at two Fauquier County intersections:

  • Route 29 at Route 28 (Catlett Road) in Fauquier County
  • Route 29 at Route 651 (Freemans Ford Road) in Fauquier County

A 2003 national study found that drivers find the flashing yellow arrow to more clearly communicate a message of caution than the solid green ball, and as a result, the risk of left turn-related crashes is reduced.
