UVA rallies, tops UNC in series opener, 2-1

uva-baseballA Pavin Smith RBI fielders choice broke a 1-1 tie in the 10th, lifting UVA to a crucial 2-1 win over North Carolina Thursday night in Chapel Hill.

The Cavs (31-19, 13-15 ACC) trailed 1-0 going into the ninth, but knotted the score on an RBI single by Robbie Coman, scoring Adam Haseley, who doubled with one out.

Haseley (2-1) got the win in relief, getting the Heels in order in the ninth.

Virginia starter Connor Jones struck out nine in a masterful eight-inning performance, giving up a run on seven hits and walking one, throwing a career-high 126 pitches. His only mistake came leading off the bottom of the sixth, when Tyler Ramirez took a fastball the other way off the scoreboard in left for a solo homer.

UNC starter Zac Gallen went eight and a third innings, giving up five hits, striking out six and walking two.

Trent Thornton (3-6) took the loss in relief.

Adam Bettinger notched his third save of the season with a scoreless 10th.
