UVa. head football coach Mike London announced today that assistant coaches Anthony Poindexter and Vincent Brown have left the Cavaliers’ program to accept coaching positions at Connecticut. Poindexter will be the defensive coordinator on new coach Bob Diaco’s staff while Brown will coach the linebackers and be the co-defensive coordinator. Diaco was an assistant coach at Virginia from 2006 to 2008.

uva-logo-new2Poindexter just completed his 10th season as an assistant coach at Virginia. His first five years he coached the UVa running backs and moved to the defensive side for the past five seasons. He coached the defensive backs in 2009 and coached the safeties from 2010-2013. He was theteam’s special teams coordinator from 2010-2012.

Regarded as one of the fiercest hitters in the game during his collegiate career (1994-98), Poindexter earned first-team All-America honors at safety his junior and senior seasons. He was chosen the 1998 ACC Defensive Player of the Year and is one of only three players in school history to earn first-team All-ACC recognition three times. He finished his career with 342 career tackles, the ninth-most in school history and tops among ACC defensive backs. He is tied for fifth in school history with 12 interceptions.

Anthony Poindexter has been a tremendous asset to the University of Virginia both as a player and assistant coach,” said London. “He is one of the all-time greats ever to wear a uniform for UVa. His love for this university has been unyielding. I have seen him develop over the years into a dynamic and passionate coach and, more importantly, mature to be an exceptional person. I feel confident Anthony is ready for the opportunity to take on the duties as a defensive coordinator. This is a great opportunity for his professional development.”

Brown completed his fourth season at UVa in 2013, his first coaching the defensive line. The previous three years he served as the team’s linebackers’ coach. He also worked at UVa in 2007 as a graduate assistant coach. He was a member of London’s staff at Richmond for the 2008 and 2009 campaign.

Vincent Brown has been a valuable part of my staff both at The University of Richmond, including the2008 team that won the FCS National Championship, and serving as the linebacker and defensive line coach respectively here at UVa,” London said. “Vince has been afforded an opportunity to take on more duties and responsibilities at UConn and this is a good opportunity for him to continue to advance in the coaching profession.

“I want to wish Vince and Anthony the best and thank them for their efforts at Virginia.”
