Kymora Johnson had 20 points – I’d question why she was on the floor for 39 minutes – to lead Virginia to a 92-59 win over Maryland Eastern Shore on Sunday at JPJ.
Seriously, you have to have other options so that you don’t have to use your preseason All-ACC point guard for 39 minutes in a squash match.
Virginia (6-2, NET: 73) led by 17 at the break and by 25 after three.
Tabitha Amanze had 17 points and nine rebounds in 22 minutes. Jillian Brown (15 points, 32 minutes), Romi Levy (14 points, 35 minutes) and Gabby White (10 points, 13 minutes) rounded out a total of five Cavaliers to score in double figures.
If coach Amaka Agugua-Hamilton doesn’t have a backup point guard that she can trust against Maryland Eastern Shore (5-5, NET: 227), she’s in for trouble when she gets into the ACC.
“Maryland Eastern Shore did a lot of things, switching up defenses, which made it a slower game. Then they were trying to press us, get us out of rhythm. I was really happy with how we handled all that. We really shared the ball. Everything was spread around. So, just really proud of our group,” Agugua-Hamilton said afterward.
Up next for Virginia: on the road at #17 Vanderbilt (8-0, NET: 22) in the ACC/SEC Challenge on Wednesday.
Tipoff from Nashville is set for 5 p.m. ET on SEC Network (SECN).
