Town of Broadway Police Chief J.D. Weaver provided more details on an officer-involved shooting yesterday stating the victim brandished a knife at patrons and the responding officer that resulted in the use of “lethal force.”
In a statement issued this morning, Weaver said police responded to a call at 12:10 p.m. for a person allegedly armed with a knife who was threatening patrons at a 7-Eleven. The fatal shooting occurred 23 minutes later, at 12:33 p.m., according to the department’s account of the incident.
The victim, a 61-year-old man, has not been identified by law enforcement.
According to the statement, the responding officer evacuated the store at 118 W. Lee St., and announced their presence to the suspect, who was near the restrooms.
The suspect, according to police, then attempted to use the knife against the officer, who responded “with lethal force.”
Virginia State Police is investigating the incident.
“We intend to cooperate fully with the state’s investigation into this matter,” said Weaver.
