Two UVA teams ready to make run for national titles?

Chris Graham

cavalanche1The fifth-ranked UVA basketball team is already 11 games into its march toward the NCAA Tournament. This week, the Virginia baseball team, still a few weeks away from the start of its season, was ranked third in the preseason collegiate baseball poll.

Augusta Free Press editor Chris Graham and host Jeff Fife break down the two ‘Hoos teams on this week’s UVA Sports Today podcast.

The basketball talk includes a review of the Cavs’ surreal 76-27 evisceration of a good Harvard team on Sunday at the John Paul Jones Arena. Chris offers perspectives from courtside, and Jeff comes in with a review of what the national media is saying in the wake of the thumping that definitely got the attention of the college basketball world.

The two also talk up Virginia’s top NBA prospects.

Then the attention shifts to baseball. Coming off a national runner-up finish in 2014, Chris thinks it could be that the #3 national ranking is actually low, with Brian O’Connor returning his three weekend starters and a pitching staff that could rank with the best ever in college baseball. The question marks are on offense, with UVA needing to replace first-round MLB draft picks Mike Papi and Derek Fisher in the middle of the order. Chris gives some insight into how Virginia will approach filling those holes, and the hole left by the departure of another MLB first-rounder, Nick Howard, a first-team all-America closer in 2014.

The show wraps with a quick look at the football offseason.
